FCM Book Club: The Book Thief

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is a haunting tail of survival and the human spirit that takes place in Germany during World War II.  The gathering for this book was hosted by Katie Ashby. She decided not to go with the main staple that was eaten throughout the book: watery pea soup.

The Menu

There was beer served, of course, and the cocktail of the evening was a French 75.

French 75

  • 1 lemon
  • 3 tablespoons (1 1/2 ounces) gin
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons (3/4 ounce) fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon (1/2 ounce) simple syrup
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 1/4 cup (2 ounces) dry sparkling wine, such as brut Champagne, chilled
In cocktail shaker, combine gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Add ice and shake for 20 seconds. Strain into chilled Champagne flute and top with sparkling wine. Garnish with a lemon twist.
The Host
Skylar had toured Dachau, the concentraion camp that was referenced in The Book Thief, and shared some photos that made the horrible stories in the book even more disturbing.

The evening was full of lively discussion and we would all highly recommend this book.

FCM Book Club: Little Bee

During last month's meeting of FCM Book Club we discussed Little Bee by Chris Cleeve.  This book is a deeply moving and often heartbreaking story.  The gathering was hosted by Katie Ashby.

Katie decided to depart from our normal theme of picking food and drinks that go along with the story because there was absolutely no Nigerian cuisine that looked the least bit appealing to her!  We think she made a great choice. On the menu were appetizers of fresh sliced cucumbers with a variety of toppings like hummus and feta, grilled  clam pizza, a prosciutto and peach pizza, and fresh corn salad.

Dessert was a toasted coconut and watermelon parfait.  Delicious!

Our book club has come full circle this year since we started out with Katie hosting.  Thanks for another great time Katie!
